Environmental RD&T: Crossmodal Initiatives

DOT Center for Climate Change and Environmental Forecasting: Led by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy, this “virtual” center brings together all operating administrations to promote a better understanding of the links between transportation and greenhouse-gas emissions. Recently, the center completed a study of the greenhouse-gas-reduction potential of selected fuels, and initiated work on the impacts of climate change on the transportation system. The DOT operating administrations contribute staff and other resources and RITA provides administrative support to the center.

Hydrogen Fuels R&D: Part of the President's Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, this RITA-led program seeks to remove barriers to the widespread deployment of hydrogen-fueled vehicles. The program conducts research on (1) codes and standards for the safe handling and transport of large quantities of hydrogen fuel; and (2) the safety of on-board hydrogen vehicle power and storage systems.
