June Surface Trade with Canada and Mexico Rose 12.6 Percent from June 2005

Tuesday, August 29, 2006 - Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 12.6 percent higher in June 2006 than in June 2005, reaching $66.9 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (Table 1).

BTS, a part of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), reported that total North American surface transportation trade rose 1.4 percent in June from May (Table 2). Month-to-month changes can be affected by seasonal variations and other factors.

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land.

Total North American surface transportation trade value in June was up 37.2 percent compared to June 2001, and up 92.0 percent compared to June 1996, a period of 10 years (Table 3). Imports in June were up 102.1 percent compared to June 1996, while exports were up 80.1 percent.

U.S. Surface Transportation Trade with Canada

U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaled $42.8 billion in June, up 9.7 percent compared to June 2005 (Table 4). The value of imports carried by truck was 6.3 percent higher in June 2006 than June 2005, while the value of exports carried by truck was 12.0 percent higher.

Michigan led all states in surface trade with Canada in June with $6.8 billion (Table 5).

U.S. Surface Transportation Trade with Mexico

U.S. - Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $24.1 billion in June, up 18.1 percent compared to June 2005 (Table 6). The value of imports carried by truck was 15.0 percent higher in June 2006 than June 2005 while the value of exports carried by truck was 18.4 percent higher.

Texas led all states in surface trade with Mexico in June with $7.4 billion (Table 7).
