Friday, September 29, 2006 - Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 12.6 percent higher in July 2006 than in July 2005, reaching $55.9 billion, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (Table 1).
BTS, a part of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), reported that North American surface transportation trade fell 16.4 percent in July from June (Table 2). Month-to-month changes can be affected by seasonal variations and other factors.
Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail and pipeline. About 90 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land.
Total North American surface transportation trade value in July was up 36.9 percent compared to July 2001, and up 83.5 percent compared to July 1996, a period of 10 years (Table 3). Imports in July were up 91.2 percent compared to July 1996, while exports were up 74.0 percent.
U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaled $35.2 billion in July, up 10.7 percent compared to July 2005 (Table 4). The value of imports carried by truck was 7.6 percent higher in July 2006 than July 2005, while the value of exports carried by truck was 14.3 percent higher.
Michigan led all states in surface trade with Canada in July with $3.5 billion (Table 5).
U.S. - Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $20.7 billion in July, up 16.0 percent compared to July 2005 (Table 6). The value of imports carried by truck was 17.2 percent higher in July 2006 than July 2005 while the value of exports carried by truck was 14.5 percent higher.
Texas led all states in surface trade with Mexico in July with $6.5 billion (Table 7).
